Chapter 323: Discovered?
Chapter 323: Discovered?
Someone’s there?
Nathan Moreau quickly looked in the same direction.
The color instantly drained from her face.
"It’s them..."
Nathan Moreau clenched her fists, her nails digging deep into her flesh, but she didn’t seem to notice.
She wanted nothing more than to go over and kill those people.
But she knew she was no match for them.
It was Magnus York’s group. They were already here.
"Any sign of the Ice Core?"
Adrian Shaw’s biggest worry was whether those people had gotten to the Mystic Ice Core before them.
Jessica Vance shook her head. "They look like they’re still hiding from something. They probably arrived around the same time we did."
The long-focus lens at the observation post was a high-powered one. Nina Jacobs glanced at the magnification level indicated on it.
kilometers.
In other words, they could see everything within a five-kilometer radius.
"Those people are about 2.3 kilometers away from us."
Adrian Shaw confirmed.
Not exactly close.
Everyone here had used a Mystic Ice Core, so even if there was a Spiritual Element Superpower User among that group, they wouldn’t be able to sense their presence.
Still, the thought of Magnus York made Nina Jacobs activate her Five Senses Enhancement.
At the same time, to get a clearer view of the situation, one of her Little Zombie Rats crept forward under the cover of rotting leaves and branches.
Several vehicles, reinforced with steel bars, were parked there.
Machine gun mounts had already been set up in the surrounding area.
The people standing there were divided into teams, and several individuals were anxiously arguing with one man, trying to plead their case.
"We didn’t know it was this dangerous when we came here! We’re quitting."
"Mr. Rhodes, that’s how it is. We were just trying to earn some supplies for our families, but if we actually go in there, we’ll probably end up dead."
the two men said one after another.
"We’re quitting too. Just pay us what you owe us in supplies."
A man and woman holding hands also came forward, and the man said.
"Quit? Pay up?"
The man, Rhodes, laughed and said,
"There’s no such thing as quitting halfway. If you leave now, you won’t even get a crumb."
"We helped you kill all those Mutant Beasts! How can you say we get nothing?"
the woman beside him demanded furiously.
The scene seemed somewhat chaotic, but the woman holding the Compass, as if deaf to the arguments, was walking around by herself.
When she came to a pile of dead leaves, she stopped.
Nina Jacobs’s heart skipped a beat.
One of her Little Zombie Rats was under that pile.
’Has it been discovered?!’
"My Compass... why is it showing a death gate?"
the woman muttered to herself, looking at the Compass in her hand.
She squatted down to observe her surroundings, then her gaze fell upon the pile of dead leaves.
"What is it, Magnus York?"
A man walked up behind her.
"It’s nothing. I just find this place interesting. There’s a death gate, but there’s also a life gate."
Magnus York stood up.
Nina Jacobs breathed a quiet sigh of relief, but their next words immediately put her on guard again.
"What does that mean?"
the man asked, looking at the Compass.
"Do you think there could be other people here?"
As she spoke, Magnus York took out a piece of Talisman Paper and tossed it into the air.
Without any warning, the Talisman Paper burst into flames in mid-air.
Then it slowly drifted to the ground.
Following the direction indicated by the Talisman Paper, Magnus York gazed into the distance.
Nathan Moreau staggered back a few steps in shock.
"She’s found us! She must have found us! Oh no, she saw me! We just made eye contact!"
Seeing Nathan Moreau huddled in a terrified ball, the others in the observation post exchanged glances.
It looked like Nathan Moreau had suffered significant trauma in the past.
At that distance, making eye contact was impossible, even for a Spiritual Element Superpower User.
"Sherry really could use the Compass to find people."
Nina Jacobs said.
On Beldane Island, Sherry Renner had used the Compass to find survivors who had been put under Hypnosis.
"But she could only get a general direction, not the specific location or the number of people."
Hearing Nina Jacobs’s words, Nathan Moreau gradually calmed down.
"You’re right. This place is well hidden. They won’t find us."
Nathan Moreau said, comforting herself.
"Not necessarily. We already killed one of their scout zombies."
Nina Jacobs was already preparing for the worst.
If Magnus York hadn’t been suspicious, she wouldn’t have wasted another piece of Talisman Paper.
’The zombie must have made her certain there were other people on this mountain. That’s probably why she used the Compass to check the area.’
Sure enough, Chase Gallagher saw that everyone over there was now looking in their direction.
"I hope they don’t spot us now."
Adrian Shaw was more concerned about attracting other Mutated Animals.
But of course, their worst fears were realized: the group started driving two vehicles in their direction.
"Let’s just stay hidden here. Maybe they won’t find us."
Shirley Lucas believed their location was concealed enough.
The rock covering their entrance looked no different from any of the other rocks in the area.
But Nina Jacobs said,
"Wayne Warner and I will go out. The rest of you stay here."
"No, that’s too dangerous."
Adrian Shaw immediately rejected the idea.
He subconsciously didn’t want Nina Jacobs to go out and take the risk.
’If anyone has to go, it should be me.’
"I have my Earth Element Protective Shield to protect me. If something does happen, they won’t be able to touch me."
Nina Jacobs had already been thinking about going out anyway.
She wanted to kill as many Mutated Animals as she could to complete the second seven-day mission.
She was still 14 short of her goal of 60.
If she went out alone, it would arouse their suspicion, but bringing Wayne Warner along would be the perfect cover.
"But I still don’t think you should go out."
Shirley Lucas was still holding out hope.
"We’re out of time. And don’t forget, Veronica Ziegler still hasn’t shown up."
Nina Jacobs had made up her mind.
She was betting that Magnus York didn’t know the full situation.
Just like Sherry Renner.
As long as she and Wayne Warner went out, they might be able to allay her suspicions.
"You’re really going out?"
Nathan Moreau hadn’t expected Nina Jacobs to make such a decision.
In her eyes, Nina Jacobs was an exceptionally shrewd person.
People like that were usually self-serving, yet here Nina Jacobs was, volunteering to face the danger.
Nina Jacobs nodded, her eyes showing no hesitation.
On the uneven terrain just outside the Mornfell Nature Reserve, two silver vehicles were driving across a gently sloping hillside.
Ben Lawson didn’t think driving here was a wise move.
The soft, eroded ground made it all too easy for the wheels to get stuck.
With several others in the vehicle, he drove very slowly.
"I doubt anyone could have made it this far. Maybe that thing of yours is inaccurate."
Ben Lawson said.
This was the most difficult mountain to climb in the entire Mornfell range.
"Did you forget about the zombie? There are definitely other people on this mountain."
Magnus York said with conviction.
"Or maybe the tracker malfunctioned. We never found the zombie’s last known location, did we?"
Ben Lawson asked.
"The fact that we can’t find it is even more suspicious. It’s possible they destroyed the body to cover their tracks."
Magnus York replied.
Ahead was a high, rounded hill with a large rock jutting out from its slope.
Just then, a massive figure came tumbling down the slope.
It was a Mutant Tiger—and a freshly killed one at that.
Immediately after, a tall man emerged, followed by a slender woman.
